Kresowja

Visual Identity and Brand Platform for a Designer Handbags Brand in Poland
Year: 2019
Scope of Work: brand platform development, visual identity

Challenge: The task was to create the identity and retail image for a women’s designer handbag boutique in Poland, combining a strong historical reference with a contemporary luxury positioning.

The concept was inspired by interwar Poland of the 1920s-30s - a period associated with Art Deco, the rise of modern consumer culture, jazz, cinema and a distinctive urban sophistication. Rather than recreate a historical store literally, we aimed to reinterpret its atmosphere through a contemporary retail language.

A retail identity with a story

The identity is built around the idea of archaeofuturism - a dialogue between the past and the present

Historical references are combined with contemporary forms, creating a visual world where Art Deco geometry, Jazz Age glamour and modern minimalism coexist.

The result is intentionally nostalgic without becoming retro. The identity recalls a particular cultural period while giving it a new, contemporary expression suitable for a modern designer boutique.
The identity combines strict typography, geometric forms, tactile materials, and bold contrasts, creating a distinctive and sophisticated retail aesthetic

Naming & Philosophy

Kresowja draws on the historical term Kresy Wschodnie - the “Eastern Borderlands,” referring to the eastern territories of interwar Poland that today form parts of Belarus and Ukraine.

The name transforms this historical reference into a distinctive contemporary brand name. Its sound carries an association with the period while remaining unusual, memorable and visually expressive.

Typography & Colors

Typography reinforces the tension between historical reference and contemporary luxury. The system combines clean sans-serif typography with a strict, almost Gothic aesthetic, creating a visual language that feels architectural and slightly unconventional. This provides structure across the identity while allowing individual applications to develop their own rhythm and hierarchy.

The colour palette is intentionally limited to black, white and grey, creating a neutral foundation for the brand. Red is introduced as an accent colour, adding energy and a reference to the expressive visual culture of the interwar period. This also allows the identity to work naturally within a premium retail environment, where the products themselves become the strongest source of colour and visual variation.

Visual Identity

The visual language is based on a contrast between strict structure and expressive details. Geometric compositions, unusual proportions and distinctive lines reinterpret characteristic Art Deco principles. Rather than relying on decorative motifs, the identity uses geometry, rhythm and contrast to create its character. The system is deliberately restrained, allowing the handbags and the retail environment to remain the central visual focus.

Materiality was an essential part of the concept. The identity draws on the tactile qualities of leather, metal, and paper, translating the physical character of designer handbags into the wider brand experience.
For Kresowja, we combined brand strategy, naming, visual identity and retail design to create a unified experience across physical and visual touchpoints. The project demonstrates our approach to retail branding: research the context, find the distinctive story, translate it into a visual system
An identity that turns cultural memory into contemporary luxury

The result is a distinctive retail identity that translates the atmosphere of interwar Poland into a contemporary designer boutique

Kresowja combines cultural heritage, Art Deco geometry and modern retail aesthetics into a coherent visual and spatial system.

Instead of reproducing the past, the project uses it as a starting point for creating something new: a brand that feels historical yet contemporary, sophisticated yet unconventional, and nostalgic yet forward-looking.
